Islam & the Concept of Friendship

Humans have always been social creatures and in need of friends and companions. Much of our lives is spent in interaction with others. For us Muslims who are living in a society where we are clearly a minority, the issue of choosing the right companions is essential for preserving our Deen. Befriending righteous and virtuous Muslims is an essential means for staying on the Straight Path. Strong... read more

Respect for Our Daughters

Experience shows us that major problems that face us as individuals, families, and nations, started off as small problems that were not properly acknowledged and addressed. They grew and until they reached critical mass and exploded. Affording due recognition is a safety valve for both the individual and society. When some problem arises that starts to exert pressure, many people forget that it is possible to contain it, and ... read more

Unity Among Western Muslim Communities

I think I better start by giving you the characteristics of the ideal Muslim community, as far as unity is concerned. And the ideal Muslim community is, of course, that of the Companions of the Prophet sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam. So if we aspire to be united we should have that ideal in our mind. We might never attain to that high level, but we should at least keep it as a goal, and as a criterion by which we judge how far towards the unity we have gone. The community of the Companions....read more

Smoking: A Social Poison

Smoking was introduced to the Muslim countries by the Europeans around 1000 AH. Its spread among the Muslims was similar to that in the West. The unfortunate fact, however, is that in the Muslim countries, no similar measures were exerted to protect the people from it. To the contrary, the media continues to advertise smoking and encourage people to do it. This caused the epidemic of smoki...read more

Alcohol According to Qur'an and Sunnah

Abu Dawood, Narrated Umar ibn al-Khattab "When the prohibition of wine (was yet to be) declared, Umar said: O Allah, give us a satisfactory explanation about wine. So the following verse of Surat al-Baqarah revealed; "They ask thee concerning wine and gambling. Say: In them is great sin...." Umar was then called and it was recited to him. He said: O Allah, give us a satisfactory explanation about wine. Then the following verse of Surat an-Nisa' was revealed: "O ye who believe! approach not prayers with a mind akka ... read more

Male Circumcision in Islam

Male circumcision is among the rites of Islam and is part of the (in Arabic): fitrah, or the innate disposition and natural character and instinct of the human creation.and hours. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Five are the acts quite akin to fitrah:Circumcision, clipping or shaving the pubes, cutting the nails, plucking  or shaving the hair under the armpits and clipping (or shaving) the moustache." (Reported in  Bukhari & Muslim) ... read more

Qur'anic Healing (Rukyah)

Islam is a complete way of life and addresses all aspects of the needs of the creation. Here we will deal specifically with matters relating to spiritual healing or Ruqyah. ( Note: Ruqyah is commonly translated in English as "incantation" which carries a negative meaning, since the word incantation is usually associated with magic, spells, and witchcraft. However, Ruqyah in Islam is the recitation of Qur'an, seeking of refuge, remembrance and supplications that are used as a means of treating sicknesses and other problems.)...\read more

Do You Think Or Does The Media Think For You ?

What we’d like to explain here is why Muslims follow Islam, and some of the rationale behind their adherence to their Ideology. Unfortunately, Islam is an oft misunderstood Ideology and Islamic beliefs are so frequently distorted. Firstly, Islam is not simply a religion, it is an ideology from which stems a political system that encompasses a social, political, economic..read more
